San Salvador is best eaten on foot rather than sitting down. These are seven stops any local will recommend before a restaurant with tablecloths.
- Yuca frita with curtido — any cart near Boulevard de los Héroes, after 6pm.
- Raspados at Mercado Central, with the tamarindo or ensalada syrups.
- Elotes locos in Parque Cuscatlán on weekends.
- Pan con pollo — the Salvadoran sandwich nobody explains well until you try it.
- Empanadas de leche, sweet, for dessert, on any downtown corner.
- Minutas shaved by hand, not by machine — you can tell by the ice.
- Pupusas in the late hours, after midnight, near any nightlife spot.
None of these stops has an official name. You know them by the line.
