High-altitude coffee: where to drink the best cup on Ruta de las Flores

By Always El Salvador Team1 min read

Salvadoran high-altitude coffee is grown right in these towns — Concepción de Ataco, Apaneca, Juayúa — above 1,200 meters, and you can taste it in the cup: sweeter, less bitter, with notes that shift from farm to farm.

Apaneca

Several coffee farms run short tours where you can see the whole process, from bean to cup, ending with a guided tasting. Worth booking a day ahead during high season.

Concepción de Ataco

The town with the highest concentration of cafés on the whole route. Look for the terraces with mountain views — coffee always tastes better with that view in front of you.

Juayúa

Less touristy, more authentic. This is where local growers drink their own coffee, and that's always a good sign.
